A trombone player, composer, improviser, and educator, David Dove’s performances have included appearances at festivals and venues such as: Espacio Fundación Telefónica (Peru), The Exploratorium (Germany), Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico), Ch’ak’ab Paaxil Festival (Mexico), The National Children’s Theater (Vietnam), The Greater Easterhouse Arts Company (Scotland), Instal (Scotland), The Blanton Museum of Art (Austin), The Menil Collection (Houston), The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (Houston), and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston (Houston). As Founding Director of Nameless Sound (a non-profit organization in Houston), he curates a concert series of international contemporary creative music, and has developed an approach, philosophy and practice of creative music education based on creativity and improvisation. Nameless Sound reaches over 1500 young people every year in Houston public schools, community centers, homeless shelters, and refugee communities.

Artists and creatives earn income through various means, some relying on aid, grants, unemployment, contract work, etc. Banks and other financial institutions often require records of income in the form of W2’s, 1099’s, etc. An issue can arise where an artist’s financial portfolio may not convey accurately what financial institutions look for. This session will cover ways to document diverse finance streams to create a larger, more accurate picture of an artist’s income; this info can then be used for applications, loans, mortgages, and/or other future financial ventures.

Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA)

TALA was formed in 1979 to meet the legal and accounting needs of artists and art nonprofits. Services include lawyer and accountant pro bono assistance for artists, patent pro bono assistance for inventors, dispute resolution services, and educational programs for the artistic and business communities. Programs are designed to help participants apply sound business practices to protect intellectual property, advance careers, and develop income.

With guidance from their network of attorneys and CPA’s, TALA is providing COVID-19 related assistance and resources to nonprofits, small businesses, and sole proprietors/independent contractors working in the arts. TALA is providing free matches with pro bono attorneys for issues arising out of the coronavirus pandemic and waiving their membership fee for artists and arts organizations suffering financial hardship due to the coronavirus.

Shayna Schlosberg is a producer and community organizer. She is currently the Managing Director of The Catastrophic Theatre. She is a proud member of Women of Color in the Arts, a steering committee member of the Houston Alliance of Latinx Arts, and a 2020 New Leaders Council Fellow. Ms. Schlosberg served in the Peace Corps in Armenia from 2010-2012.

Claire Drennan

With more artists and creatives shifting to present their work exclusively online, it’s important to note the particularities of intellectual property once their work enters a virtual space. Do archived Zoom streams, Instagram Lives, or Facebook Live filmed with an organization mean consent to digital publishing rights in perpetuity? Do ‘legal’ statements in an image caption on social media equal copyright protection? A legal expert will cover the basics of what should go into artist contracts to protect their intellectual property rights of creatives venturing into digital outlets and what a copyright does or doesn’t do.
