School of Unity & Liberation (SOUL)

SOUL was founded in 1996 in the midst of a California youth movement that brought thousands of young people of color out into the streets for the first time, fighting for educational equity and against criminalization at the ballot box and beyond. Inspired by the example of the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee, an organizer training center at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement, SOUL started as an institution dedicated to developing the skills of local youth organizers. Two decades later we have trained over 10,000 people and our popular education curriculum has been used to train thousands more. SOUL has convened organizers of all ages in neighborhoods near and far and built new capacity in hundreds of organizations. We are honored to strengthen the fights that win justice for our communities and to contribute to building the movements that will win liberation for our people.

Colin Hendee with Fifth World Collective is putting their manufacturing equipment to work to produce inexpensive and easily reproducible merchandise that artists can sell online. They plan to work with artists to develop their product, produce it in house for them, and will cover the first round of materials to expedite placing items in artists hands so they can begin their sales efforts. Services include CNC Routing, Laser Cutting, Custom Fabrication and more.

The Arts & Culture Hurricane Preparedness Toolkit can help you begin developing a customized disaster preparation and recovery plan to protect your artistic practice and nonprofit organization. The toolkit covers common hurricane hazards, checklists for dealing with the hurricane before and after it has arrived, emergency phone contacts, helpful web links and more.

Houston Arts Alliance’s disaster resilience website for artists and nonprofits provides short videos and succinct text with information about what to do before and after a disaster.

Topics and suggestions useful before a disaster include:

• Assess risk and protect your studio.
• Make plans for evacuating or sheltering in place and keep emergency supplies on hand.
• Document your stuff and back up vital records; evaluate cloud storage and the risk of cybersecurity threats.

Affordable Care Act – The comprehensive health care reform law enacted in March 2010 (sometimes known as ACA, PPACA, or “Obamacare”). The law has 3 primary goals: 1. Make affordable health insurance available to more people. The law provides consumers with subsidies (“premium tax credits”) that lower costs for households with incomes between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. 2. Expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults with income below 138% of the federal poverty level. (Not all states have expanded their Medicaid programs.) 3. Support innovative medical care delivery methods designed to lower the costs of health care generally. (Source)

Coinsurance – A fixed amount – typically expressed in percentage terms – of each medical bill that you pay yourself, above your deductible. Together, copayments and coinsurance are called out of pocket costs. (Source)

Copayment – aA small amount of each medical bill that, once you have exceeded your deductible, you still have to pay out of pocket. Copayments are typically seen at doctors’ offices or when filling prescriptions, and are a fixed amount – typically something like $20 per visit, or $10 per prescription. (Source)

Counselor – A counselor’s primary focus is talking to you to help you overcome your problems. This is commonly referred to as “talk therapy”. Talk therapy helps by assisting you with processing negative thoughts, looking at life from a different angle or discovering more productive ways to react to events or toxic people in your life. Counselors cannot prescribe medication. Should you need medications, they can refer you to a psychiatrist. (Source)

Deductible – The amount you are required to pay before your health insurance kicks in. A plan with a $2,000 deductible, you’ll have to pay the first $2,000 of medical bills before the insurance company covers anything.(Source)

Exclusive Provider Organization (EMO) – Allows you to see any medical provider within the network, but typically does not require a referral, and therefore a primary care doctor is not required either. EMOs are more flexible than HMOs, but are generally a bit more expensive, but not as expensive as a PPO (see below), because an EMO won’t cover out-of-network medical providers. (Source)

Federally Qualified Health Centers – According to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), FQHCs: Qualify for funding under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act (PHS); Qualify for enhanced reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid, as well as other benefits; Serve an underserved area or population; Offer a sliding fee scale; Provide comprehensive services (either on-site or by arrangement with another provider), including: Preventive health services, Dental services, Mental health and substance abuse services, Transportation services necessary for adequate patient care, Hospital and specialty care; Have an ongoing quality assurance program; Have a governing board of directors. Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) – Your care must be coordinated by a primary care doctor who issues referrals to specialists on an as-needed basis. Typically, the doctors in an HMO plan are employed by the HMO, which also operates its own medical facilities. The result is a cost efficient and highly convenient approach to healthcare, but also one that is fairly limited, since HMOs won’t cover the cost of medical providers outside of their own network, except in emergencies. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) – Offers the most flexibility in terms of medical providers, but you pay for the convenience: PPO plans are also typically the most expensive among health insurance options. A PPO is the most flexible because you can see any medical provider you want without a referral, and in most cases, the insurance company will even pay for providers that are out of its network, just at a significantly reduced rate. Psychiatrist – A psychiatrist is a doctor who prescribes psychiatric medications to its patients. Typically you won’t receive lots of “talk therapy” from a psychiatrist. They are more focused on providing you with medications. (Source)

Psychologist – A clinical psychologist is a professional who has earned a PhD or a PsyD in clinical psychology. In most states, psychologists cannot prescribe medication, but are trained to work with individuals who have either mild or severe psychological issues. Some psychologists do not work as therapists, but instead teach at universities or conduct psychological research. (Source)

Social Worker – Social workers often focus on solving social problems and connecting clients with appropriate resources. (Source)

The Abundant Artist Association – The Abundant Artist Association is a members-only community program for professional artists who intend to make a living through their art, complete with courses and other bonuses. The Abundant Artist Association has partnered with an insurance broker to offer affordable group insurance to its members.

SAG-AFTRA Health Plan – The SAG-AFTRA Health Plan provides health benefits to tens of thousands of eligible media professionals and their dependents around the globe.

Fresh Arts Artist Registry – Fresh Arts’ online registry invites Houston creatives to create a profile to make them findable to others in Houston’s arts community.

MantecaHTX – The nation’s first online directory of Latinx creatives practicing in the literary, performing and visual arts.  We are based in Houston, Texas and believe in a need to collectively organize as cultural producers, curators and organizers to fully grasp the artistic landscape of Houston.

Poets & Writers – Well over ten thousand poets, writers of literary prose, and translators maintain listings in this essential resource for literary artists who are interested in connecting with their peers—as well as editors, agents, and reading series coordinators looking for authors and translators for new projects.

Visual Arts

Houston Art Society – The goal of Houston Art Society is to advance the study and appreciation of the arts through art demonstrations, workshops and art shows. Fellowship is fostered through annual Christmas and Spring luncheons for members.

Houston Center for Photography – Houston Center for Photography’s mission is to increase society’s understanding and appreciation of photography and its evolving role in contemporary culture. We strive to encourage artists, build audiences, stimulate dialogue, and promote inquiry about photography and related media through education, exhibitions, publications, fellowship programs, and community collaboration.

Print Matters – PrintMatters is a Houston-based 501c3 non-profit arts organization started by five artists who have exhibited locally and nationally and shares a love of printmaking. Our goals are to promote traditional and non-traditional printmaking, encourage print collecting, and further the professional growth of our members.

Visual Arts Alliance – Visual Arts Alliance (VAA) is an educational organization for serious practitioners of the visual arts and interested members of the general public. Founded in Houston, TX in 1981, VAA is an all volunteer-run, 501(c)3, non-profit organization.

Watercolor Art Society – Houston – Founded in 1975, the Watercolor Art Society – Houston (WAS-H) is a non-profit organization with over 700 members. For over 40 years, WAS-H has brought the excitement of water-media to the greater Houston area with outstanding exhibitions, world-class instruction and dedicated community outreach. Year-round opportunities are provided to every level of painter, from novice to the seasoned expert.

Literary Arts

FuenteCo – To nurture creativity and community, we offer a program of generative workshops and retreats, including our day-long flagship retreat, Write Wild; FuenteCo Write-ats, our ever-moving impromptu coffee shop get-togethers for stray writers; a Youth Studio program where young writers and artists will self-reflect and let their imagination roam free; and a variety of readings, open mics, projects, collaborations, and other events.

Tintero Projects – Tintero Projects / Proyectos Tintero aims to promote writing & reading opportunities for emerging Latinx poets and writers in the Houston – Galveston/Gulf Coast Region.

VIP Arts Houston – For the last 10 years, VIP Arts Houston has bridged the gap between marginalized artists through training, dialogues, and collaborative projects. We have since continued to invest in our community through the creation of more community workshops, The Colony Summit for writers of color, and A Conversation for Colored Girls.

Writespace – Writespace is a 501(c)3 grassroots literary arts organization supporting writers of all genres through writing workshops, festivals, manuscript consultations, readings, open mics, and other events. We seek to give writers who can’t afford to earn a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing the same high-quality training and mentorship opportunities available through MFA programs.

Cinema Arts

Aurora Picture Show – Aurora Picture Show is a non-profit media arts center that presents artist-made, non-commercial film and video.  We are dedicated to expanding the cinematic experience and promoting the understanding and appreciation of moving image art.  

Houston Film Commission – The Houston Film Commission, a division of Houston First Corporation, was founded in 1987 with the purpose of promoting the greater City of Houston & Harris County areas as a film & television production destination.

Southwest Alternate Media Project – Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit media arts center in 1977, SWAMP is Houston’s premier creative resource for filmmakers and film lovers. SWAMP promotes film and new media through education, information, and presentation activities for all ages.

Performing Arts

Dance Source Houston – The mission of Dance Source Houston is to nurture and support contemporary dance artists, the organizations that present them, and to identify and build audiences for contemporary dance in the greater Houston area.

Dramatists Guild of America – The Dramatists Guild of America is the membership association of playwrights, librettists, composers, and lyricists writing for the stage in the United States.

Houston Songwriters Association – Our mission is to support and encourage the art and craft of songwriting, to provide resources and educational opportunities to songwriters, and to nurture a positive environment in which songwriters may fully develop their potential as songwriters. The group meets monthly to critique songs and showcase talent

Preparation

CERF+ Artist Disaster Risks Guide – This guide provides tips and advice on how to best prepare your creative space for disasters.

CERF+ Studio Protector – A resource page on prepping, insuring, and assessing risk for studios.

Houston Arts Alliance: Prep for All Hazards – “Preparing for “all-hazards” requires knowing your risks and developing emergency plans to use during and after the situation. The plan will layout procedures for communication, preparedness, response and recovery. Your All-Hazards Emergency Plan can be as detailed or as simple as you choose to make it. The most important thing is that it is user friendly for your staff and volunteers.”

Performing Arts Readiness – The Performing Arts Readiness (PAR) project supports a variety of programs to increase knowledge and the ability of performing arts organizations to create and execute emergency recovery plans. The PAR project will offer free webinars and onsite training, conference presentations, grants, and tools to help build the field’s capacity for disaster preparedness. Some of Performing Arts Readiness resources include:

• PAR Online Resources for Disaster Planning and Recovery includes resources for creating a Disaster Plan, Business Planning, Emergency Networks, and other resource links.
• Loss of Income Calculator: This tool presents a starting point as to what your organization’s losses would be; this is only one small aspect of the overall approach of the Performing Arts Readiness project, which includes discussion of risks and business resumption in webinars, live classes and presentations, articles, and consultations with individual institutions.

Materials & Environment

Scorecard: The Pollution Information Site – Scorecard is the web’s most popular resource for information about pollution problems and toxic chemicals. Find out about the pollution problems in your community and learn who is responsible. See which geographic areas and companies have the worst pollution records.

GoodGuide – GoodGuide uses product ingredient information coupled with authoritative sources for chemical regulations to rate products so that consumers can have instant access to credible product information that is easily understood. GoodGuide collects product ingredient information through publicly available data (found on ingredient labels and websites) or directly from the manufacturer.

Environmental Health, Toxicology & Chemical Information: Arts & Crafts Materials – TEHIP is part of the Division of Specialized Information Services (SIS), which produces information resources covering toxicology, environmental health, outreach to underserved and special populations, HIV/AIDS, drugs and household products, and disaster/emergency preparedness and response. 

US Consumer Product Safety Commission Art Materials Business Guidance – Art materials for consumers of all ages must comply with a number of requirements under federal law.  Art materials that are designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger must meet additional requirements, which are described on this page.

Precautions

Nontoxicprint: Nontoxic Printmaking, Safe Painting & Printed Art – “Visitors to this Nontoxic Printmaking website are often looking for information about health and safety. This page aims to respond to some of the most common concerns by reproducing articles and extracts from existing publications and by directing printmakers to sources of expert opinion and advice.”

GYST Health and Safety in the Studio – It is necessary to know the precautions within the studio in order to stay safe. It’s important to know the materials that you are using, but also what others are using in your presence.

Princeton University Visual Arts Material Safety – Princeton’s art department provides a safety guide that includes different visual arts’ safety procedures for both faculty and artists.

Princeton University Theatre Safety – Princeton’s art department provides a safety guide for participants that are in theatre.

Bering Omega Community Services – Bering Omega provides compassionate care to those living with HIV and AIDS through four programs, a dental clinic, a day treatment program, a housing assistance program, and Omega House, our residential hospice.  Each of these services comes at little to no cost to our clients, providing access to medical and palliative care services that would otherwise be financially unattainable.

Central Care Integrated Health Services – Central Care Integrated Health Services aspires to provide accessible, affordable and high quality comprehensive healthcare services to all the residents in the Greater Houston Area whose healthcare needs are unmet through patient-centered education, collaborations, wellness and outreach programs to eliminate healthcare disparities. CCIHS prides itself on the fact that we don’t turn anyone away. We care for ALL patients, regardless of insurance coverage, citizenship status or level of income.

El Centro de Corazón – Serving Houston’s East End community since 1994, El Centro de Corazón (El Centro) is an accomplished Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with four health center locations and offers a comprehensive range of pediatric and adult health care services for the medically underserved and uninsured, which includes primary care, women’s health, dental care, and behavioral health services.  El Centro also provides ancillary services, such as case management and eligibility assistance, to help patients and their families overcome obstacles to accessing health care services.

Hope Clinic – HOPE Clinic has grown into a full time Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) providing over 13,000 patient visits a year. HOPE Provides health care services to all regardless of the patient’ ability to pay. In particular, HOPE Clinic serves the uninsured, underinsured, those with limited English proficiency, and the low-income. A unique characteristic of HOPE Clinic is its capacity to provide services in 14 different languages, including: Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean, Burmese, Arabic, and Spanish.

Houston Health Department Health Centers – The Houston Health Department health centers protect the health and social well-being of all Houstonians. The health centers provide patient services to meet the community’s present and future needs in family planning, immunizations, tuberculosis diagnosis, care for sexually transmitted diseases, and dental care. The Houston Health Department will not deny access to services due to inability to pay. A discounted/sliding fee schedule is available for most services. Parental consent is not required for family planning services to adolescents.

The Ibn Sina Foundation – The Ibn Sina Foundation operates six beautiful community clinics throughout Greater Houston and Port Arthur areas, focused on providing low-cost preventative & primary medical, dental, diagnostic, specialty and children’s health services to indigent community.

Legacy Community Health – As a full-service, Federally Qualified Health Center, Legacy identifies unmet needs and gaps in health-related services and develops client-centered programs to address those needs. A federally Qualified Health Center addresses the unmet needs of those who find themselves lacking in certain health care services. Legacy works with a wide range of health insurance providers already, but as an FQHC we also offer a sliding fee scale.

The Montrose Center – The Montrose Center empowers the community, primarily lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and their families, to enjoy healthier and more fulfilling lives. They provide services and programs for individuals such as, counseling, education & prevention, senior citizens, and addiction/recovery services.

San José Clinic – San José Clinic is the original safety-net clinic in Houston and a leading provider of quality healthcare services for individuals and families in the Greater Houston area who struggle the most with accessing care. For over 95 years we have proudly upheld the legacy of our founders by continuing to provide healthcare for those who need a health home the most, including primary and specialty medical and dental care as well as vision, laboratory and pharmacy services. San José Clinic is a ministry of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, a Texas Medical Center member institution, and a United Way agency. 

Spring Branch Community Health Center – SBCHC has 6 community health centers in the Spring Branch, West Houston, Katy, and Cy-Fair area ready to meet all your healthcare needs. We accept Medicaid, CHIP, Medicare, and all private insurance. We also offer a sliding fee scale based on the patient’s family size and income for those without insurance.

Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA) – Mental Health America of Greater Houston, established in 1954 by philanthropist Ima Hogg, is the area’s longest serving mental health education and advocacy organization focused on shaping the mental health of people and communities in the areas of children and education, integrated health care, chronic illnesses, women, suicide prevention, and veterans. MHA provides a mental health resource brochure. The Guide is a listing of mental health resources in Harris County that are low-cost and/or affordable. As a community service, Mental Health America of Greater Houston offers “The Guide” at no cost to individuals and organizations.  It features resources for Adults, Children/Adolescents and Older Adults/Elderly and is widely used and distributed by schools, hospitals, mental health professionals, and call centers. The Guide is free to the public.

Legacy Community Health – Legacy’s Behavior Health Services offer assessment, medication management, therapy, and psychological testing for all patients. We accept most insurance plans, too, and provide care for anyone who comes through our doors, regardless of their ability to pay.
