About The Project
WHAT WE DO
Teatro Comunitario de Houston is a Latinx community theater and performance company
founded in 2018, with the mission of promoting equality, diversity, inclusion, social justice, and
multiculturalism among the Latinx communities through the performing arts in Spanish.
Our theater company is open to adults and high school-level youth. We do not discriminate on
any grounds, be it sexual orientation, ethnic group, language, religion or lack thereof. Our actors
are a mix of semi-professional and community members. We offer theater preparation and
training to the actors prior to the start of rehearsals for each play.
WHO WE SERVE
Our audiences are Spanish-speaking Houstonians in all their diversity. We aim to engage our
audiences with performances on social issues of concern which may motivate them to seek
solutions. We also present international works which may inspire our audiences and help them to
better understand other cultures. By adding subtitles in English or French to some of our
performances, we also aim to promote multiculturalism.
Our program for the 2022-2023 season:
A Spanish adaptation of “Le médecin malgré lui”, a comedy by French playwright Molière to mark
the 400th anniversary of his birth.
“Ya no quiero flores” by Eduardo Henriquez, a play that addresses the issue of sexual abuse and
violence against women inside the family.
“Segundo Festival Cultural en Español”. The festival will include other local Latino
theater groups, various musicians and poets, and street theater.
“Houston Diversidad del Mundo”, interactive theater taking a walk through the historic
wards to discover the city’s diversity.
WHY WE DO IT
Teatro Comunitario de Houston aims to help Houston-based budding artists from many different
Latin countries gain a better understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of their own culture so
as to better share it among the Latinx communities of Houston who come to see our plays.
The goal of our theater productions in Spanish is also to promote changes that our society needs
by tackling burning issues through theater while aligning with our mission of promoting equality,
diversity, inclusion, social justice, and multiculturalism.
WHAT WE NEED
As a small and young organization, we lack the necessary financial resources to support our
theater programming. Every donation through Fresh Arts, no matter what size, will help us achieve our goals of benefitting artists, audiences and ultimately society at large. Please accept our thanks in advance for your generosity.
