Rail to the Sea

1501 Sawyer St
Houston, Texas 77007

Hours:
  • Always Open

Rail To The Sea is inspired by the artist’s Character series. The colors come from various tropical fish in the Indian Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Red sea, among others. The lines are drawn from Nudibranch and patterns in hard coral found on the Flower Garden Banks Marine Sanctuary off of the Texas coastline. The bright colors in the mural are also representative of the diversity in our city, which Janavi describes as a melting pot of cultures and communities. The mural exists proximate to a major rail line, which ends at the Port of Houston, hence the mural’s title.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Janavi M Folmsbee wants to live in a world where we can close our eyes and make all the plastic in the ocean disappear. Folmsbee was born in 1987 and raised in Mumbai, India. In 2005, she moved to the United States of America to study at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (S.A.I.C). As an artist, she has shown her work in India, Beijing, Europe, Dubai, and the U.S.A.

INSIDER TIP

To get a good shot of the mural, shoot from across the street from the parking lot at The Silos. For the best light, and to avoid street traffic, it’s best to photograph in the early morning or early evening. A wide-angle lens will help!
